Lukmanier or Gotthard?

Which is the more important pass between north and south? This question has come up time and again throughout history: because the Lukmanier is less than 2,000 metres above sea level, it is considerably lower than the other Alpine passes and was historically very important as a mule track. The Lukmanier Pass also played an important role in the choice of route for a railway across the Alps. Some planners believed that it could be built without an expensive tunnel. However, in 1869, the politically influenced decision was made in favour of the Gotthard Railway.
