Biasca grotto experience

Duration: approx. 10–15 minutes on foot

Leave the station and walk towards the centre of Biasca. On the way, you can admire the Casa Cavalier Pellanda, a historic building that houses the Casa Cavalier Pellanda Museum. Continue to the Church of St Peter and Paul, an important example of Romanesque architecture in Ticino.

Walk back towards the centre of Biasca, following the signs for «Santa Petronilla». The route leads slightly uphill on a well-maintained path past the church and through an area of chestnut groves. Along the way, you can admire the 14 chapels of the Way of the Cross, a remarkable landscape structure built in 1742 and restored in 1998. The Santa Petronilla waterfall is one of the most beautiful in the canton of Ticino. It is formed by the «Ri della Froda». In summer, natural pools form along the course of the river, inviting visitors to take a refreshing dip. These natural lakes in the midst of unspoilt nature are ideal for anyone looking to cool off on hot summer days.

Under the waterfall Behind the railway station, under the Santa Petronilla waterfall, the river forms a small, natural pool with clear, fresh water, ideal for cooling off in summer.

Near the Romanesque bridge along the chapel path Here you will find more crystal-clear pools with small cascades, perfect for young and old. The water is cold but refreshing. Further upstream there are emerald green, calmer pools and finally a larger, deeper natural pool with spectacular views. The signs remind you: enjoy the beauty, but don't take any risks.

Option 1: approx. 30 minutes back along the same route to the centre and then to the station Option 2: approx. 45–50 minutes (longer, scenic circular route). From the waterfall downhill through woods, past old mills and stone bridges, towards the railway station - well signposted («Biasca»/«Stazione FFS»).

Valid for one return journey on the Treno Gottardo between 16 May and 31 December 2025 on the following routes:

• Basel–Olten–Lucerne–Arth-Goldau–Göschenen–Airolo–Biasca

• Zurich–Zug–Arth-Goldau–Göschenen–Airolo–Biasca

The outward and return journeys do not have to be made on the same day. The special price remains the same regardless of the departure point.

• Water: The river water is quite cool, so you can look forward to a refreshing dip, especially in summer.

• Safety: Always check the depth of the water and the current before diving in, especially in hidden places. Pay attention to the signs on site: enjoy nature, but never jeopardise your safety.

• Accessibility: Some bathing spots are located directly on the path and are easily accessible, others require a short descent over rocks. If you are planning a swimming break, comfortable, waterproof shoes are recommended.
