Highlights at Sasso San Gottardo
Underground expedition
The Metro del Sasso funicular railway takes you deep into the imposing tunnels, caverns and secret passages of the former military stronghold. Here you will find troop quarters, ammunition depots, fire control centres and even gun emplacements. The combination of history, atmosphere and authentically preserved rooms makes this part of the experience unforgettable.
Rays of hope over the Gotthard
After the underground worlds, a side tunnel opens up at the end of the tour and leads out onto a breathtaking panoramic terrace. From here, the Gotthard massif can be seen in all its glory. The stark contrast to the darkness of the fortress and the open view of the mountains form the perfect conclusion to an experience that combines Swiss history, nature and wonder.
History brought to life
The exhibition «Mythos Gotthard» impressively recounts the cultural, geographical and historical significance of this unique region. It is complemented by the only permanent exhibition on Goethe's three journeys through the Gotthard region in Switzerland. This allows you to experience history in a particularly vivid and illustrative way.
