Description

In the old town of Liestal, the Museum.BL in the old armory attracts visitors with its varied exhibitions. The permanent exhibition on silk ribbon weaving offers an exciting introduction to the history of the silk ribbon industry, which strongly shaped the Basel region for over two hundred years and is also repeatedly present on the ViaSurprise. Liestal, the cantonal capital of Baselland, has a small but fine old town with a well-preserved Upper Town Gate – you can learn more about this in the lively city and poet museum. The route leads through some residential quarters southwards out of the town and along the Glindrain, over the Frenke to Bubendorf. Bubendorf is known for its passementerie, as well as the Murenberg plateau with the adjacent oak pasture forest of Wildenstein. Immediately north of Bubendorf, the Hintere Frenke coming from Waldenburg and the Hintere Frenke coming from Reigoldswil merge. Here we find one of the last undeveloped terrace landscapes of importance in Baselbiet. During the Würm Ice Age, the lower terrace gravels of the Frenke were deposited. They form the highest Würm gravel deposition level. After crossing the village, the path leads up to the Murenberg. Wildenstein Castle and its manor farm were built at the end of the 13th century. Old plans from 1681 show that Wildenstein operated its own three-field system. At that time, the hay from the meadows was not enough to feed the animals. Therefore, all available areas of the three-field system had to be grazed: the common pastures, the stubble fields, the fallow lands, and also the forest. The pasture or pasture forest existed on the Murenberg areas as an open oak forest. This oak pasture forest at Wildenstein has been preserved until today. The oldest oaks were planted around 500 years ago. Via Arxhof, Schlif, Upper Sörzach and Löre you reach Titterten, a small village on the edge of the folded Jura and between the two Frenke valleys. Along a small stream, you can reach the ruins of Rifenstein with its legend trail and from there in a few minutes to Reigoldswil.
