Description
This stage of the ViaRhenana starts in the picturesque old town of Schaffhausen. We should plan enough time just for a stroll through the small alleyways to the pretty town houses with their outstanding bay windows and magnificent facade paintings.
Opposite Büsingen on the High Rhine is the Schaaren forest reserve, which is of great interest to nature lovers. Its floodplain landscape is still largely natural, as is the mixed oak forest. Its strategic location as a bridgehead over the Rhine has always been just as important. The historical-archaeological nature trail follows the traces of fortifications from various eras.
Upstream is the former Dominican convent of St. Katharinental. Another gem on the High Rhine is Diessenhofen with its picturesque townscape and historic wooden bridge. The Siegelturm is the only original clock tower in Thurgau.
A cultural highlight shortly before the stage destination is the village of Wagenhausen with its Probstei. Also worth seeing are the oldest trotte in the canton of Thurgau and the privately used castle.
The crowning glory of the stage is the small medieval town of Stein am Rhein with its beautiful façade paintings on magnificent town houses.
