Description

This stage of the ViaRhenana officially starts behind the Rheinau bridge on the border between Germany and Switzerland. The covered wooden bridge spans the High Rhine between the German town of Altenburg, a district of Jestetten, and Rheinau. The toll bridge is one of today's rare Pfahljoch bridges.

The village with its stately houses is surrounded on three sides by the Rhine and neighboring Germany. The former Benedictine monastery of Rheinau with one of the most beautiful baroque churches in Switzerland is located on an island in the Rhine.

The second striking bend in the Rhine surrounds the "Schwaben" peninsula. Remains of the Celtic rampart, which served to fortify the "Schanz" settlement, can still be seen here today.

The path continues along the banks to the small castle of Wörth with the thundering Rhine Falls on the opposite side of the Rhine.
