Description
We walk through three Swiss cantons on the first stage of the ViaRhenana:
Basel-Stadt impresses with its cultural diversity and the silhouette of the metropolis on the High Rhine.
The picture changes with the transition to the canton of Basel-Landschaft: Birsfelden already has a strong industrial character due to the power station and port facilities. Accordingly, the hiking trails along the Rhine are largely paved.
In terms of landscape history, the canton of Aargau (Alemannic: land by the water) is closely linked to its rivers and floodplains. Here, hikers can enjoy narrow paths and trails along varied landscapes along the Rhine.
The Romans already recognized the importance of the High Rhine as a northern border. Remains of numerous watchtowers from the 4th century have been preserved as part of the late Roman Rhine fortifications. Even more significant are the ruins of the Roman settlement of Augusta Raurica.
The day's destination of the hike is the German-Swiss twin towns of Rheinfelden.
The next stage of the ViaRhenana continues upstream to the trumpeter town of Bad Säckingen (D).
