Description
This varied route takes hiking enthusiasts twice over Aargau soil. From Bad Zurzach, it goes to the "city of bridges." This means Koblenz, where four historic large bridges enable crossing the Aare and Rhine. Shortly leaving the water, the ViaRhenana offers splendid views of the Rhine Valley on the forested north slope of the Table Jura Mountains, between Schwaderloch and Rheinsulz. Back on the shore, the path continues to Laufenburg, where the national border is crossed.
From Bad Säckingen, the hiking trail leads back into Aargau. Through the riverside forests of the Rhine and past the ruins of several Roman watchtowers as well as the earthwork "Bürkli" near Riburg, the historic old town of Rheinfelden is soon reached. A short detour to the "Inseli" with a refreshing and beneficial foot bath is worthwhile before the ViaRhenana leaves the canton once again. For onward or return travel after the hike, the boat trip between Basel and Rheinfelden is perfect.
