Description

The 13th stage of the Via Jacobi begins in Schwarzenburg. After a few minutes on an asphalt road, the hamlet of Torhalten is reached. Here, at the almost 150-meter deep Sense Gorge, which also forms the cantonal border between Bern and Fribourg, a unique ensemble of old road constructions has been preserved.

After the Sodbach bridge, the route goes uphill to Heitenried, where a neo-Gothic church can be visited. Over meadows and fields, you reach St. Antoni. The neo-Romanesque sandstone church is dedicated to Anthony the Hermit. Along the course of the Taverna river, you can observe the activities of beavers. Shortly thereafter, Tafers is reached, where the Sensler Museum offers insight into the lifestyle of the 18th and 19th centuries.

Continuing over fields and past individual farms, the city of Fribourg is reached. From here, there is a magnificent view of the medieval old town and the dominating St. Nicholas Cathedral. After descending to the Sense, the last covered wooden bridge of the city is crossed.

Steeply uphill again, narrow alleys lead through the old town and past St. Nicholas Cathedral. Those who climb the 74-meter high bell tower are rewarded with a fascinating view of the city and the Fribourg Prealps. The stage ends after an approximately five-hour hike at Fribourg train station.
