Description
The hike starts in St-Imier. Passing the impressive buildings of the local watch brand, the path ascends to the Combe-Grède rock basins, which seem almost impassable. The steep gorge is overcome by steps made of limestone and ladders anchored in the rock. The mountain path is well secured but requires sure-footedness, good physical condition, and solid hiking equipment. Above the gorge, the view widens over Montagne du Droit, with the houses of Villeret far below and the ridge of the Chasseral soon coming into view. One last effort and the reward awaits: From the Chasseral, the view stretches over the Tessenberg plateau, the Swiss Plateau, the lakes, and over to the majestic Alpine range. The descent to Nods on a pleasant hiking path is the crowning glory of this varied day of hiking.
In the 18th century, industrialization also began in the valleys of the Bernese Jura. Especially the watch industry quickly gained importance. A world brand still has its headquarters in St-Imier today. The name “Longines” goes back to a former swamp area in the town. There, in 1866, a manufactory for the production of pocket watches was founded. A few years later, the brand name was officially registered to protect against counterfeiting. “Longines” is therefore considered the oldest registered watch brand in the world. Today, the company is part of the Swatch Group.
Two huge vertical rock walls tower on both sides of the entrance to the Combe Grède. At first, the crevasse appears so dark that one feels like entering a large cave. No wonder this mysterious place became the cradle of old legends. People believed here to find the workshop of St. Nicholas and his helpers. Witches who caused the crop-destroying hail were also suspected under the protection of the high rocks. Since 1932, the Combe Grède with its surroundings has been a nature reserve. Chamois have also been released here and developed into a large colony.
The Chasseral, at 1606 meters, is the highest peak in the Bernese Jura and offers an overwhelming view. The panorama set up at the hotel names 160 peaks between Säntis and La Dôle. The panoramic view is even more comprehensive at the summit signpost, where a directional antenna is also located.
