Via Alta Vallemaggia - Stage 10: Rifugio Maria Luisa-Capanna Piano delle Creste

Today’s programme takes you half way around the Basòdino massif, reaching an elevation of 2,800 metres—the highest section of the entire trek. The first climb leads to Lago Castel. At the back of the Basòdino mountain range, the trail continues to the next mountain lake, the deep blue Lago Nero, and up to the Tamier Pass, which offers a fantastic view of the Formazza Valley with Monte Rosa in the background. The stony terrain makes the Tamier Pass ideal for ibex. The descent to the Capanna Piano delle Creste is over scree fields. The Val d'Antabia, where the hut is located, is a beautiful valley surrounded by alpine nature. The present hut was still used for cattle grazing until 1968.
