Valley hike Rheinwald (Sufers - Hinterrhein)

Description
The valley hike in the Rheinwald along the young Hinterrhein begins in Sufers at the Sufner reservoir. Over the old transit route of the "viaSpluga" it goes to the Splügen castle ruin, the only castle complex in Rheinwald, and further to the village of Splügen. Splügen is a typical mountain pass village with sunburnt Walser houses and Italian palaces and was awarded the Wakker Prize by the Swiss Heritage Society in 1995 for exemplary protection of the village appearance.
In Splügen the bridge over the Hinterrhein is crossed and on the right side of the valley it continues to Medels, Nufenen and Hinterrhein.
Hinterrhein is considered the oldest historically verifiable Walser settlement in the canton of Graubünden. Attractions in Hinterrhein include the Old Landbrugg and the Bachhuus-Chäller, an about 300-year-old vaulted cellar which has been cleaned up and converted into a cozy local pub where food and drinks are served by prior arrangement.
The villages of Rheinwald lie on the PostAuto line. You can hike from village to village as you wish.
