Description
Untervaz has a half-hourly public transport connection with Chur and is easily accessible by car as well. The hike starts right in the middle of the village (Untervaz Dorf stop) and leads via Vordergasse to the junction for the various alp pastures. We follow the signpost to the left towards Fallboden and Hinteralp. At Fallboden, again left through the forest to Bärenhag. Along the way, we pass two short tunnels carved into the rock.
The alp road from Bärenhag to the former Walser settlement Batänja is somewhat steep but easy to walk. At Batänja (which belongs to the municipality of Haldenstein), it is worth taking a break and enjoying the view of the mountains opposite in the Rhine Valley. Unfortunately, there are no dining options here.
The path now winds through the small settlement and continues through forest and meadows to the highest point of the hike at Gürgütschboden. From here it goes downhill along the alp path. There are always wonderful views into the valley and of the rock formations of the Rätikon. The last section from Fallboden back to the village is the same as the ascent route. Right by the village square is Restaurant Linde, where you can comfortably wait for the next post bus.
