Description

This route follows the original course of the transviamala walking through the legendary Viamala Gorge. Starting from Thusis, the route follows the old commercial road from 1820 through the Lost Hole to Rongellen. At the height of the spectacular Traversiner footbridge, the route crosses the Rhine side and leads via a technically demanding singletrail to the Viamala visitor centre. Immediately at the stairway, which goes down to the Rhine, is the Wildener Bridge, which once made the feared Viamala route accessible to coaches.

The trail then continues south and down to the Rhine, where a delicate suspension bridge made of stainless steel and natural stone, the Punt da Suransuns, leads over the young Rhine. Through a fairy-tale forest, the route continues to the height of Cultira Davora near Reischen, where a magnificent view of the open Schams valley is presented. Over Reischen and Zillis, the path continues over varied trails to Pignia and down to Pignia Bad. The Rhine side is crossed again, and after Clugin and the climb to Plans, shortly before the destination in Donat, another architectural highlight follows, the Valtschiel Bridge, an early work of the renowned bridge builder Robert Maillard. With the PostBus, you return to Zillis and Then to Thusis.
