Description
From Schwarzenburg station, first head into the village center. Somewhat hidden stands the beautifully renovated former early mass chapel St. Maria Magdalena, built in the Nordic style of the Teutonic Order in 1466. Passing the castle, whose walls consist of demolition material from Grasburg, the path changes into the small valley of the Dorfbach in the Schönenboden (to Riffenmatt 1h45, – customs house 4h20) and leads over the Gäu to the Schiltberg cheese dairy. On the old Guggisberg path, which now runs up over a spur of the Schwendelberg, it goes uphill. Walenhus lies on a magnificent viewing terrace. At that time, Walen referred to the Romance-speaking Burgundians. The area of the Guggisberg municipality was also cultivated by the Cluniac monks from Rüeggisberg (mother house Cluny near Mâcon). Slightly west, in Hindereberg, the Hans-Joggli loved by Vreneli is said to have lived. The path now steeply ascends to the unique conglomerate tooth of the Guggershorn, from whose viewing platform an excellent panoramic view can be enjoyed. The descent into the high-altitude Guggisberg is short. The church was dedicated to the Burgundian Saint Mauritius. Also worth seeing are the mighty village lime tree, the nearby Vreneli Museum with Vreneli fountain, and the valuable old farmhouses. The steep descent into the Laubbach valley passes just below the cemetery to Flue and, crossing a spur of the Egg, to the houses of Hirschmatt. Ahead rises the broad, forested ridge of the Egg, on whose flank one climbs via Plötsch–Rollishus to the Neuböden alp and to the Brönnte Egg. The name indicates a former slash-and-burn clearing. On the ridge height, you enjoy the splendid view through the Seeschlund into the Schwarzsee area before the path steeply descends via Warmensiten and Mittlisti Siten to the customs house at the confluence of the Warm and Cold Sense rivers.
