Description

The hike from Iseltwald to Giessbach is not too long, leaving enough time besides the exercise for other pleasures, such as travelling to or from by boat or having a longer barbecue break under the leafy canopy of the lakeside forest. When the lake reaches a certain temperature – which at Lake Brienz takes a bit longer than at other Swiss waters – water lovers can also pack their swimwear. In Iseltwald, it’s worth a look at a boat dock that became world-famous about two years ago when it appeared in a scene of a Korean Netflix series. Although the stream of selfie-obsessed tourists has since diminished somewhat, well-dressed Asian women still use the boat dock daily as a catwalk to have themselves photographed and filmed. It is quieter on the lakeside path to Giessbach. The views over the lake, to the Schneckeninsel and across to the Brienzergrat, are wonderful. Exciting sections pass beneath overhanging rocks or through a tunnel. At Gloota, about halfway between Iseltwald and Giessbach, an inviting barbecue area has been set up. Until shortly before Giessbach, the path follows close to the water, then climbs up to the historic Grandhotel Giessbach, where you can enjoy not only a lavish stay but also simply a coffee on the terrace. Afterwards, the marked circular trail to the unique Giessbach Falls, with a footbridge behind one of the falls, is an absolute must. Finally, it’s about a twenty-minute walk to the post bus stop. For those who want to hike longer, it is possible to continue for about an hour along Lake Brienz to Brienz. Although this stretch has some hard surfaces, overall it is a rewarding path.
