Description

The name Langnau is derived from the field name lange Au. Langnau is the traditional trade, commercial, and service center of the upper Emmental, having been granted market rights in the 15th century. Langnau experienced a heyday in the 18th century; in 1798 it had more than twice as many inhabitants as Burgdorf or Thun.

At the starting point of the hike, the signpost indication Hohwacht should be noted. You go through the underpass along Schmiedenstrasse and leave the village of Langnau to the left after the Ilfis bridge. The route then mostly ascends on a footpath, partly on a dirt road or farm road, through forest, along the forest edge or over pastures to the Hohwacht. The view sweeps over numerous ridges and gullies and the Alps can also be seen. The route continues along the ridge without major altitude differences over open land and through forest. At Scheidegg there is a rest area for a break. At the signpost location Hinter Scheidegg the descent begins via Mittler Stärberg and Flüeacher into the valley floor of the Ilfis. The remaining section along the Ilfis is relaxing. This is a popular local recreation area. Over the Moos bridge you cross from the left to the right bank of the Ilfis. At the ice hockey stadium Ilfishalle you turn right, cross the railway on the overpass, and soon reach the destination of the hike.
