Description
From the Rüeggisberg post office, a detour to the impressive monastery ruins is worthwhile; noteworthy are the sculptures on the north wall of the transept and in the lapidarium in the cloister. The small museum also contains a model of the former church. Past the school facility and the Ober Hangebach farm, a paved path leads up the flank of the Rüeggisbergegg. From the edge of the forest, one enjoys a comprehensive view of the Gantrisch chain and over the Schwarzenburg region into the Fribourg area. Crossing the upper course of the Schwandbach in the forest, the path gently descends to Vorderfultigen. A remarkable panoramic view opens again: Bütschelbach ravine, Riedhubel, Imihubel, Bütschelegg and Rüeggisberg-Egg dominate the nearby surroundings. The descent over Sandacker to the Bütschelbach, which quickly forms a deep ravine and turns towards the Schwarzwasser, is quite steep. Beyond the stream, you follow the Bütschel street for 400 m to the hamlet of Baumgarten. The natural path then leads in several bends up to the Liental farmstead, then steeply along the forest edge ascending into the forest and almost level to the nearby Bütschelegg. Past the guesthouse, you reach the summit sign. From here you enjoy the most beautiful panoramic view in the Längenberg area: Hohgant, Bernese High Alps, Stockhorn and Gantrisch chains, Schwarzsee mountains, La Berra, western central plateau, Längenberg, and even the Jura lakes can be seen. On the return route, the guesthouse offers another rewarding variant, although about 2 km of paved surface must be accepted. The main route is also varied: after a short descent to Oberbütschel with a view to the Thun lake area, you cross the valley hollow of the Bütschelbach again. The ascent into the Taanwald is gentle, the view at its southern edge into the Gantrisch area is magnificent, and the return hike over Mättiwil to Rüeggisberg is relaxing.
