Description
From Thusis at the southern exit of the village along the local road, over the old Nolla bridge and on towards Sils via the Rhine bridge (pavement). Shortly after the bridge, we must cross the sometimes busy road, which unfortunately has no pedestrian crossing (under the A 13).
On the other side, we follow the signs towards Hohenrätien up as far as the fork to Ehrenfels Castle and take this path, which has no significant inclines, passing the castle on our way to Sils i.D train station. Here we take the train station access road to Schynstrasse, travel along this towards the valley for a time, and then walk along the cart track to the beautifully situated church of Sant Cassian, 733 metres above sea level. Then we follow the edge of the forest, or pass Baldenstein Castle to EW-Zentrale Nisellas, where we cross the Albula using a footbridge. We ramble along the river to the road and head along this towards St. Agata initially but before we get there, we change direction towards Scharans. We take the road upwards just before Clusabach and at Pt. 794 cross the bridge to Scharans, 766 metres above sea level. At the north end of the village we take the path to the village of Almens, which leads through a beautiful landscape of meadows and fruit trees.
After passing through Almens, we continue past the ruins of Canova Castle to the Canovasee lake, a favourite destination for excursions and bathing (privately owned, a fee is charged for bathing). Shortly before reaching the village of Paspels at Pt. 788, we take the mountain road leading up to Trans as far as Dusch, 870 metres above sea level. You should definitely take a short detour here to the Chapel of St. Maria Magdalena, which is charmingly situated on a wooded hill. Almost at the lower end of the village, a narrow road leads downwards steeply and opens out into Domleschgerstrasse to the north of Castle Ortenstein. Take this road over the bridge at Mulegns until the first fork, and then head north to the village of Rothenbrunnen.
Alternatively you can also take the footpath on the right opposite the ruins of Ob. Juvalta, 300 metres after the fork in the road, and get to Rothenbrunnen shortly after the church. Take the post office van or train back from Rothenbrunnen.
