Description
The Thur is the second longest river in eastern Switzerland after the Rhine and the namesake of the canton of Thurgau. From its source in Toggenburg in the canton of St. Gallen, it flows further through the canton of Thurgau. Before Ossingen, it reaches the border with the canton of Zurich and after 135 km flows between Flaach and Ellikon into the High Rhine. During the hike along the last section from Andelfingen, we enjoy the beautiful nature on the Thur path. Between Eggrank and Thurspitz lies the largest contiguous floodplain area in Switzerland with an area of 453 hectares. It was created between 2008 and 2017 through the project "Flood protection and floodplain landscape at the Thur mouth." The Thur and the Rhine were revitalized, creating new habitats for animals and plants. Additional paths and facilities such as campfire sites, observation huts, and viewing platforms were built for visitors. To provide information, the Thurauen nature center was opened in 2011 as the gateway to the floodplain protection area.
