You move equally on Ausserrhoden and Innerrhoden territory on the hike around the Rotbachtobel. The Rotbach forms the border between the municipality of Teufen and the district of Schlatt-Haslen. But there is also the Capuchin convent Wonnenstein, which lies as an Innerrhoden exclave in the area of Teufen. How did this come about? After the 1597 division of Appenzell, the territorial belonging of Wonnenstein was disputed until a federal decree in 1870 established that all land within the monastery walls belonged to Appenzell Innerrhoden. With 47 sisters, the community had its greatest flourish eighty years ago. Today the convent has seven Capuchin nuns who devote themselves mainly to gardening and housework in addition to prayer.
