Description

The fastest and easiest way into the moor landscape of the Seefeld begins at the PostBus stop "Habkern, Zäundli". At first, follow the hiking trail northwards to the Grünenberg Pass. The first and last parts of the route - about 75 minutes uphill, around 60 minutes on the way back - run on hard surface. Gaining altitude steadily, you soon reach the Grünenberg Pass. It is the gateway to the Seefeld, a fairy-tale moor landscape with gnarled trees, fragrant juniper and blueberry bushes, and numerous boulders. It takes little imagination here to feel like you are in the realm of fairies and dwarfs. Instead of dreaming, however, you should remain alert. Because the hiking trail is not always clearly visible, you should pay attention to the white-red-white markings.

Continuously ascending, the hiking trail leads from the Grünenberg Pass first to the Hintere Seefeld and its hut. Shortly afterwards, you reach the hut of the Mittlere Seefeld. Here begins the detour to the Tropfloch cave. This is a sandstone cave also known as the Seefeld cave. Its small entrance area is accessible even to laypersons. Those who want to explore it should take a headlamp and a hiking companion for safety. Going further into the cave should only be done with an expert guide, as it is easy to get lost in the cave system with main, side, and cross passages. Numerous details about the cave can be found on the website of the Bern section of the Swiss Society for Cave Research, sghbern.ch: Under "HRH" you can download a floor plan and a research report about the cave.

Back at the Mittlere Seefeld, choose the hiking trail that initially runs directly eastwards. Before it leads back to the route to the Grünenberg Pass, here the full beauty of this moor landscape presents itself once again.
