Description
The Seebach valley with the ice age-shaped Nussbaumer, Hüttwiler and Hasensee is a significant natural and cultural landscape of Switzerland known as the "Glacial landscape between Thur and Rhine." The three Nussbaumer lakes are so-called dead ice lakes that formed at the end of the last ice age after the melting of the Thurgau glacier. Human settlement traces in the Seebach valley can be traced back to the Mesolithic. In the north of the Hüttwilersee, wall remains of a Roman estate have been excavated. On a prominent hill above the lake, substantial ruins of Hälfenberg Castle are preserved. Since 1994, the Seebachtal Foundation has been committed to creating diverse natural habitats for native plants and animals. The Hüttwilersee remains a popular bathing lake in summer.
The cultural highlight of the tour is the over 850-year-old Kartause Ittingen. The former Carthusian monastery today is a seminar center with museums, hotel, restaurant, and estate farm.
