Description
Descend from Villeret station into the village, cross the main road and follow an asphalted lane to the rest area at the forest edge. The ascent begins on a wide forest road through the narrow wooded gorge Combe Grède. Several times the path, confined by steep rock walls, crosses the mostly dry stream bed over large boulders. The very steep gorge section is overcome via limestone steps and metal ladders anchored in the rock. The path is well secured but requires careful walking. Soon the view opens towards the Montagne du Droit. Deep below lie the houses of Villeret. Passing a rest area leads to the distinctive signpost at Pré aux Auges, where tall hornbeams and alpine flowers delight. Yet another 300 meters of elevation gain must be mastered to Hotel Chasseral (20 min to the summit). The view is breathtaking. The descent is varied. At Pré aux Auges, leave the ascent route and gently climb to La Corne, the so-called Chaise à l’Evêque (= bishop's seat). The unique viewpoint offers a bird's-eye deep view. Beautiful mountain maples line the way to Métairie des Plânes. Across open meadows, cross the high terrace to La Perrotte farm and then descend steeply through forest to St-Imier.
