Pass crossings have an old tradition The Gotthard massif belongs to one of the most historically significant areas of Switzerland and early on connected northern and southern Europe. The Alpine crossing over the Gotthard pass was one of the most important trade routes and was passable until the early 19th century via a simple mule track. Around 1830, the legendary Tremola, an architectural masterpiece that still impresses today, was built.
