Description
The hike begins with a leisurely stroll through Solothurn’s old town. The famous St Ursus Cathedral, or ‘Solothurn Cathedral’, is particularly worth seeing. If you have the time, you can climb up the imposing tower with a phenomenal panoramic view of the city and the Swiss Plateau. It is not far from the lively city to the quiet Verena Gorge with its romantic paths. The hermitage there consists of the hermit’s cottage, St Verena and St Martin’s chapel and two grottos; the cave behind St Martin’s chapel is said to have once served as a place of residence for Saint Verena. As a cultural asset of national importance, the hermitage is a listed building.
The steep but varied ascent to the Balmfluhchöpfli and the Röti – with views that are well worth the effort – begins in Rüttenen. The last stage from the Röti to Hotel Weissenstein and the mountain station of the Weissenstein cable car is a relaxed expedition. If you’re feeling hungry after this popular tour, then you’re in for some luck at the mountain inns atop Solothurn’s local mountain.
