Description
The hike begins with a stroll through Solothurn's old town. Especially worth seeing is the famous St. Ursus Cathedral. Those with time can also climb the impressive tower for a phenomenal panoramic view over the town and the Midlands. It's not far from the vibrant town into the quiet Verenaschlucht gorge with its romantic paths. The hermitage there consists of a hermit's house, the Verena and Martin chapels, and two grottos; the cave behind the Martin chapel supposedly once served as the dwelling of Saint Verena. As a cultural asset of national importance, the hermitage is protected as a historic monument.
In Rüttenen begins the steep but varied ascent to Balmfluhchöpfli and onto Röti, which reward the effort with magnificent panoramic views. The last relaxed stretch is from Röti to the Hotel Weissenstein and the mountain station of the Weissenstein cable car. Those feeling hungry after this popular route will find satisfaction at the mountain inns on the Solothurn local mountain.
