Description
This region at Lake Constance is one of the most beautiful and historically rich landscapes in Europe. Emperors, popes, princes, and abbots shaped this area and left visible traces.
Above Mannenbach is the well-known Schloss Arenenberg with the Napoleon Museum, which commemorates Hortense, the stepdaughter of Napoleon I, and Napoleon III, who lived here in exile.
At this beautiful viewpoint, there are royal seating spots to stop and immerse yourself in the breathtaking surroundings. The variety of resting places along the entire route is extremely diverse and therefore a pure joy for young and old, culture lovers, and nature enthusiasts alike.
At the entrance to Ermatingen, coming from Steckborn, you cycle past the impressively beautiful beach bath completed in 2003 and continue along the cycle path that now runs between the road and the lake, always with a direct view over to the island of Reichenau.
Ermatingen is an old fishing village whose character is well preserved in the town district around the harbor. Every year, three weeks before Easter, the “latest carnival in the world” is celebrated here, named after a small Lake Constance fish called the “Groppenfasnacht.” The Church of St. Albin with its Gothic tower is, like two dozen others in Thurgau, a parity church, meaning it is actually used jointly by the two main denominations.
From Ermatingen to Gottlieben runs a well-developed but unpaved cycling and hiking path between the railway line and the extensive reed beds of the eastern lower lake. In Ermatingen, the cycle path follows the lakeshore, making a curve around the town center along the road.
