Description

The path is easy to find: The destination Weissenstein can already be read on all signposts from the starting point Untergrenchenberg. In addition, the route is a stage of the Jura Höhenweg 5 of Wanderland Switzerland and is correspondingly signposted. The course near or on the ridge offers views of the Jura chains to the north. To the south, the gaze wanders over the Mittelland to the Alps, from the Alpstein massif over the Central Swiss peaks, the Bernese Alps, to the mountains of Western Switzerland. The meandering course of the Aare between Biel and Solothurn impresses repeatedly. In places, Lake Biel can be seen. The hike poses no special demands. This and the moderate duration make it a classic among Jura hikes. It is accordingly frequently walked. The route alternates over pastures or through forest, on paths or forest roads, sometimes uphill, sometimes downhill. The Hasenmatt, a hummock-shaped elevation that serves as an orientation aid when looking at the Jura chain from the south, is experienced as a sweaty climb. The hill is not only the highest point of the hike but is considered the highest point in the Canton of Solothurn. Those who prefer it more leisurely take the forest road shortly after Müren past the Althüsli excursion restaurant. Through a longer wooded section, one reaches before Hinter Weissenstein the lowest point of the hike. The destination at the mountain station of the Weissenstein gondola can be reached gently ascending on a forest road.
