Description
Following the old mule track of the Val Canaria we reach Madrano from where you can admire the Stalvedro gorge below. The Strada Alta continues towards Brugnasco and Altanca where we find the intermediate station of one of the steepest funiculars in the world, the Ritom funicular. Near the funicular you can also admire the beautiful village church located on a rock and a historical monument.
After crossing Altanca, a village where there is an ancient restored mill, we arrive at Cresta di Sopra, the highest point of our trip (1419 m); from here the Strada Alta descends and crosses the beautiful hamlet of Ronco, then reaches Deggio. Here the path rises slightly first to San Martino where there is a church dating back to the 11th century, one of the oldest in the valley, and then to Lurengo, where you enter the Bosco d'öss that leads to the locality of Freggio. Traveling this last section above the Piottino Gorge, we leave the Upper Leventina to enter the Middle one. After passing the village church, you ascend towards Osco; the destination of our first stage.
