Description
After a short ascent from the Bifertenhütte AAC (2482 m a.s.l.), you reach the pass summit "Falla Lenn" (2576 m a.s.l.). From here the path leads broadly through the impressive, barren rocky world of the Cavorgia da Vuorz – it might look like the moon – to the Fuorcla da Gavirolas (2526 m a.s.l.) Another crossing leads to the Gavirolas glacier forefield. This is of national importance: the glacier's retreat is clearly visible here, and the stream has deeply cut into the landscape. This is followed by a second glacier forefield called "Fil dil Fluaz" – the flanks of Ruchi and Hausstock rise on the left. Then continue over the Plaun da Bovs into the valley of Aua dil Mer. Then the Panixerpass (2403 m a.s.l.) is not far anymore.
A look back into history: On the night of October 6 to 7, 1799, the drama at the Panixerpass began. At two o'clock in the morning, the Russian General Suvorov set off from Elm to cross the pass with his soldiers. The fresh snow was a foot deep. The soldiers slipped on the icy mule track and fell into the depths. Only the vanguard reached Panix the next day. The rest of the troops did not even make it to the pass summit. Most froze to death; exhausted and deprived of all bodily strength, that cold night on the way to Panixerpass.
