Description
The ideal starting point for the Mittelbünden hut route is the city of Chur. Here you board the post bus to Tschiertschen and load the bikes onto the rear rack 760 meters higher at the terminus. This bus runs hourly, and each bus has space for up to five bikes. In Tschiertschen, your own muscle power is required. On asphalt and later gravel roads, you climb up to the well-known and serviced Ochsen alp, the first highlight of the route. Gravel roads remain the base for a while, eventually leading to the Isel reservoir in the valley floor of Arosa.
Then follows a wonderful, varied and effortless descent along the young Plessur stream to just below Litzirüti, where the day's second ascent begins. This leads over 550 meters of elevation on a gravel road to the historic Walser settlement of Medergen. This is almost the start of the final descent to Sapün. This begins at Seebijboden just above the settlement. The single trail descent is fun, varied but sometimes also challenging. It leads down into the Sapün valley to just below the Heimeli guesthouse, the extraordinary daily goal of the first stage of the Mittelbünden hut route.
