Description
The southern loop is a varied circular hike over the Selibühl, a popular viewpoint above the watershed.
From the stop or the Stierenhütte car park, follow the hiking trail towards Alp Selibühl. Soon the view opens up to Lake Thun, the Bernese Alps, and the Emmental – with clear visibility far into Inner Switzerland. At the same time, the distinctive limestone peaks of the Gantrisch range come into view.
Past Alp Selibühl, where the upper hut is occasionally served, the path continues to the scenic hill of Selibühl. The ascent is rewarded with an impressive panoramic view.
The descent follows the broad northern ridge via the so-called Engländerwägli: a historic hiking path section from the heyday of the Gurnigelbad hotel, when predominantly English tourists visited the area. At the junction in Gaucheit, you can choose between the northern or southern loop for the return journey.
Heading north leads through wild mountain forest on the shaded side of Selibühl. Because of the shaded side, it is a great route at warm temperatures.
