Description
The circuit through the three-country region offers you the opportunity to discover the Rhine in all its facets. From the Krebsbachtal, Rhine Island and Petite Camargue Alsacienne nature reserves, to the tributaries of the Wiese and Kander, passing through the cities of Basel, Huningue and Weil am Rhein – discover real treasures, nature in unusual places and many plants and animals in diverse habitats! Along the eleven stations of the route, you will receive exciting information about the Rhine and its two native inhabitants: the beaver and the salmon. The history of these two species in the three-country region is closely linked to that of the great river. The beaver "architect" as well as the agile migratory salmon felt extremely comfortable in the original alluvial landscape of the Rhine, with its many secondary arms and natural floodplains. During the rectification and construction of the Rhine in the 19th century, and due to intensive hunting, animal habitats were lost and populations decimated, so beavers and salmons were long considered extinct in the Upper Rhine region. It is only recently, thanks to large-scale renaturation measures, recolonization projects and migration aid facilities, that a new spread is possible. During your outing, you will discover closely how our two friends beaver and salmon disappeared, and how we now attempt to create coexistence between humans and animals. A varied and versatile route for bike enthusiasts, nature lovers and friends of animals!
