Description

In 1991, Switzerland celebrated its 700th anniversary. On this milestone birthday of the Confederation, the Path of Switzerland was created around Lake Uri. The historically significant hiking trail begins on the Rütli meadow – the "Cradle of Switzerland" – and ends in Brunnen. Each canton has its own section of the path, sized according to the population at the time of the anniversary, so that approximately 5 millimeters "belong" to each Swiss citizen. Marble stones with the cantonal coats of arms and the years of their accession to the Confederation mark the route sections. The entire route is well connected by ship, cable car, train, and bus. This enables the path to be easily divided into any length of stages.
