Description
Castle Heidegg towers on a rocky spur above Lake Baldegg, the magnificent landmark of the Lucerne lake valley. The distinctive turret from the Middle Ages served for centuries as a country residence for wealthy Lucerne citizens. Today the site is open to the public. The castle tower houses a museum about the region's history. Besides the splendid interiors, the large castle garden is especially worth seeing. Until the 1950s, vegetables were grown there. During a state visit, the then German Federal Chancellor Konrad Adenauer recommended: "Roses should bloom here!" The idea was taken up, and since then, numerous rose varieties in all possible colours – from white through yellow, orange and pink to anthracite – have flourished in the baroque garden. The stately estate is the cultural-historical highlight of a varied hike through the Seetal.
