Description

Davos is often referred to as an Alpine town. Indeed, the districts Dorf and Platz with their many boutiques and bars have distinctly urban features. But as soon as you leave the center, the area shows a completely different face. The Landwasser valley was originally settled by pioneers from the distant Valais. The Walser brought their own language and a distinctive style of building: they mostly built their wooden houses far apart. This characteristic construction style can be found at various points on the circular hike between Davos Frauenkirch and Davos Glaris. A special gem is discovered right at the beginning of the hike: the Davos district Frauenkirch is named after the church “Zur lieben Frau,” which stands on the slope above the train station. The charming little church was destroyed by an avalanche more than 300 years ago, rebuilt afterwards and equipped on the mountain side with a prominent wedge as protection against avalanches.
