Route 5: Herisau - Schönengrund

Directly behind the Wilen stop of the Appenzell Railways, the route climbs up the hill ridge and follows it to Harschwendi above Waldstatt. Now we hike along the ridge with fantastic views to the right over the lowlands and Lake Constance and to the left towards the Alpstein with the Säntis as its most prominent point. Passing Risi, over Sitz with its restaurant, the route goes to Landscheidi and then left over Arnighöchi. At the 1015 m point, we leave the ridge and descend into the village of Schönengrund, which is served by the post bus.
