Rebenweg - Mediterranean flair over Lake Biel

Description
The hike begins at the Biel/Bienne bus stop, Rebenweg/Vignes. First, it goes along the “Rebenweg” on a natural path through the forest. Shortly afterward, the scenery changes: the path leads out of the forest into the vineyards. From now on, you enjoy a wide view over Lake Biel. There are always beautiful photo opportunities with the winegrowers’ villages on the lake and St. Peter’s Island, especially as the blue (or gray) of the water and sky changes depending on the light. On sunny spring days, it is almost Mediterranean warm in the vineyard terraces – and on the mostly asphalted path. So it can happen that you already feel like you are on summer vacation there in late April.
Above Twann, the path passes the exit of the Twannbach Gorge. Shortly afterward, it is time to say goodbye to the “Rebenweg”: you hike up the road to Schernelz and follow the signs to the Restaurant Aux Trois Amis. Its terrace offers a spectacular view over Lake Biel. Here you can taste the wines of the winemaker Sabine Steiner, whose winery is located on the same street. From the restaurant, the hiking trail passes the middle station of the “vinifuni” funicular railway, which operates between Ligerz and Prêles. After that, you enter the forest, where your feet finally get a break from hard surfaces. Slightly up and down, the now clearly narrower hiking trail leads southwest. Finally, the descent to La Neuveville follows. The French-speaking community still belongs to the canton of Bern. It is worth taking time for a little stroll through the picturesque old town before returning to Biel by train.
