Piz Umbrail and descent to Lai da Rims

In the summer months, a postbus runs from Sta. Maria up to the Umbrail Pass. Shortly below the Astras mountain hut, the ascent begins along the border with Italy. On the way, we pass some relics of the Swiss border fortifications from the First World War. After a scree field, a short section requires a head for heights. Wonderful views from Piz Umbrail. Descend past Lai da Rims (2396 metres above sea level) - the mountain lake is an ideal place for a rest. Descend steeply and zigzag along a stream until you reach the road from Val Mora. The path branches off at Tschuccai. We keep to the right and hike down the Val Vau to Sta. Maria.
