Description
Embedded in vineyards lies the village of Nussbaumen with its distinctive half-timbered houses. The path leads through woods and fields to Steinegg Castle and further to Chalcheren (Kalchrain), where a Cistercian nunnery once stood. After its dissolution in 1848, the complex was converted into a work education institution.
From the hill ridge, there is a wide view into the Thurtal valley and up to the Alps. The hike leads past vineyards to Herdern, where a castle from the 11th century stands. Today it houses a social institution with a castle shop offering its own as well as regional products.
Somewhat elevated above the Thurtal valley lies Pfyn, a place with traces of Roman culture. Remains of the Roman military road, which once connected the provinces of Raetia and Gaul, are still visible. The community gained nationwide fame at the latest in summer 2007 through the pile-dweller series of Swiss television.
