Description
From Nidau station, cross the bridge over the Nidau-Büren canal and follow it towards the lake. At the lake begins the extraordinarily beautiful lakeside path: diverse lakeside forest trees and bushes, reed beds, views to the opposite villages and the broad St. Petersinsel fascinate while walking through the Ipsach shore area. Now to the slightly elevated church of Sutz. In Sutz-Lattrigen, on the grounds of the von Rütte estate, about 200 m from the hiking trail, is the diving base of the cantonal archaeologists documenting the pile dwellings in Lake Biel. A display case provides information about the excavations. Especially lovely is the stretch through the Mörigen bay and through the shore area of Gerolfingen. Along the forest edge you reach the Hagneck power plant, an art-historically significant landmark from the time of the Jura water correction. Over flat sandy shore – former lakebed – you follow the reed belt to Lüscherz, where several prehistoric lakeside settlements were discovered during the Jura water correction. Now the landscape character changes: over ditches and through old hollow ways you reach the steeply falling Hofmannsfluh, from which, long ago, an owner of the Upper Budlei (named Hofmann) is said to have thrown himself on horseback down in despair. Wonderful views through the old pine stands to St. Petersinsel and to the Chasseral. Via Vinelz and the excellently laid out lakeside path you reach the small town of Erlach.
