Description

The small village of Englisberg features a considerable stock of farmhouses, bakehouses, and granaries. The magnificent high-altitude hike along the eastern edge of the Längenberg begins at the bus stop. The village is crossed heading south, then you turn left. On a wide gravel path, you descend over a scenic hilltop to the Aarbuchholz, cross the cantonal road, and reach the Cholholz forest. At the forest edge near Winzenried is the Teufelsstein. This large erratic boulder was deposited here millennia ago by the Aare glacier. As clearly shown by the moraine ridges visible in various places along the Höhenweg, the ice sheet during the ice ages reached up to this height. The Höhenweg gently ascends past meadows and fields to individual farms and small hamlets: from Hofmatt, you reach Falebach via Rossweid. Along the way, you enjoy views of old, flower-decorated farmhouses and granaries, as well as the ever-changing outlooks on the Bern agglomeration, the Belpberg, the Emmental, and the peaks of the Bernese Oberland. At Gruebefeld, a well-equipped picnic area with tables, benches, and firewood awaits hungry hikers. Through the Toffehohle, an impressive hollow way from ancient times, you reach Obertoffen, the village, and the Toffen train station.
