Description

The ascent via the normal route starting from the Finsteraarhorn hut is a long, high alpine route that requires endurance, experience, and secure mastery of alpine techniques in every respect.

With crampons and roped up, the route initially goes over the glacier, before steeper firn and ice slopes have to be overcome in the upper part. The ascent over the Hugisattel (4,088 m) is not technically extreme but can be demanding with bare ice or hard firn conditions. The ridge from the saddle to the summit requires focused walking in combined climbing – rock, firn, and exposed sections alternate. Orientation can be tricky in poor visibility.

At the top, a panorama opens up that is unique in the entire Alps: the surrounding four-thousanders, the Valais, the Bernese Oberland, and the Rhone Valley lie clearly at your feet – in good conditions a breathtaking moment. But the return journey demands full concentration again: the ridge is also exposed during the descent, the firn can become soft, and the length of the route requires a stable schedule and good fitness.
