Description
The border triangle at the bend in the Rhine forms the backdrop for this cycle tour. From the historic cityscapes of both Basel to the dreamy idyll of Sundgau, there is everything to delight the culture-loving cyclist. You start at Lörrach railway station and immediately turn out of the wide Wiesental valley towards the western foothills of the Dinkelberg around the moated castle of Inzlingen. From there, the route descends via St. Chrischona to the High Rhine and eastwards to the Rhine crossing at the Wyhlen hydroelectric power station.
Switzerland awaits you with the extensive Roman town of Augusta Raurica, before heading through the industrial landscapes around Pratteln and Muttenz to the south of Basel, where you can explore the picturesque Leymental valley. From here, you cross the French border at Neuwiller and enter the Sundgau region with the mythical site of the three virgins of Wentzwiller. Despite the rural idyll, Basel is not far away and your return journey takes you right through the heart of the tri-border city. To complete the round of mythical places on this tour, you should venture up to the Ottilien church in Obertüllingen shortly before the starting point. A marvellous view over the entire border triangle will reward you for the small effort.
