Description

The 30-minute walk is historically interesting but also offers reflective moments as it passes the chapel, parish church and monastery. The women's monastery of St. Joseph in Muotathal was originally founded in 1288 on the Muota. However, the flood of the wild stream troubled the Franciscans, and in 1687 they were able to move into the newly built St. Joseph's Monastery. The old monastery, the only church building from Romanesque times in the old canton of Schwyz, has been preserved and today serves as a chapel inviting quiet prayer. Between the old and the new monastery, the path passes the Russian Cross, which recalls a difficult time. In 1799, Russian General Suvorov invaded Muotathal with his soldiers. In 1902, the Muotathal residents erected a memorial cross in the Hürital, at the site where the first Russian officer fell. This cross has been located at the monastery since 2012.
