Description
The monastery area, located on a hill near Brunnen, is the home of the Sisters of Mercy of the Holy Cross. They call themselves "Ingenbohler Sisters" and are part of an international congregation of Catholic nuns – a community in faith as well as in life and work.
It was founded in 1856 by Capuchin Father Theodosius Florentini (1808–1865) and Sister Maria Theresia Scherer (1825–1888). The religious community emerged as an important response to the growing distress in the 19th century. Today, around 2600 sisters live in 18 different countries within the congregation, addressing the diverse needs of modern times with openness and energy.
The monastery trail consists of nine stations and invites you to an exciting circular walk on the monastery hill. Visitors experience the history of Ingenbohl Monastery along the path: Who was Capuchin Father Theodosius Florentini (1808–1865), the founder of the Institute of the Sisters of Mercy of the Holy Cross? You will also learn much about the work of the co-founder and first superior general, Mother Maria Theresia Scherer (1825–1888), who took on the responsibility of the newly founded order at a young age.
And the monastery trail leads you to one of the most beautiful viewpoints in the municipality of Ingenbohl. From the monastery hill, you enjoy a wonderful panoramic view: on one side, the valley basin of Schwyz stretches out, crowned by the Kleine and Grosse Mythen mountains. On the other side, you are enchanted by the view over Lake Lucerne extending up to Seelisberg and the Urner Alps.
Information about the monastery trail can also be accessed digitally. Simply scan the QR codes at the individual stations and the history comes alive. You can find the link to the video contributions here .
