Description
The route starts in Aarau, where the charm of the picturesque old town mixes with a modern flair. Cycling past bright deciduous forests and idyllic shores of the Aare River, soon the historical wooden bridge of Olten comes into view. A few pedal turns from the dreamy old town, upstream awaits the mighty castle complex of Aarburg and the Gäu plateau – the granary of Switzerland. Upon arrival, the picturesque lanes of Solothurn invite you to a discovery tour. Those needing refreshment after this bike ride are best off taking a dip in the Aare or enjoying a revitalizing drink at the Mediterranean-inspired "Solothurn Riviera."
A stroll through the old town alleys is highly recommended. The landmark of Solothurn is St. Ursus Cathedral. 249 steps lead up to the tower and the great panoramic view. At 66 meters high, the view is magnificent; the dizzying view down to the old town offers many discoveries, e.g. the Old Arsenal with its knight armors or the natural history museum.
