Description
This historically and spiritually interesting path starts in the alleys of the charming Old Town of Locarno. On the short but steep ascent, you pass twelve small shrine stations narrating the Passion of Christ. The numerous steps are set in a splendid landscape, adorned with palms, exotic shrubs, and a small stream. Once you reach the top of the Sacred Mountain, you enjoy an incredible view of the city of Locarno and the surrounding region, the Maggia delta, and Lake Maggiore up to the border with Italy. Madonna del Sasso is an important pilgrimage destination, founded in 1487 by the Franciscan friar Frà Bartolomeo Piatti from Ivrea following the apparition of the Madonna at this very place in 1480. It is one of the most important historical and religious sites in Ticino, characterized by valuable works of art. The convent is still inhabited by Capuchin friars today. The Orselina-Locarno funicular takes us back to Locarno.
