Description
From the Santa Maria Hospice, located at 1914 m above sea level and served by a PostBus stop, numerous hiking routes branch out.
One of the most beautiful walks is the one from the shores of Lake Santa Maria to the Cadlimo hut at 2570 meters altitude. After a short flat section along a wide dirt road, continuing through the Val Termine towards the Ritom region, a trail climbs steeply, allowing you to quickly gain altitude. Then the path stretches out into a landscape characterized by the presence of the Medel Rhine river, a tributary of the Rhine river, whose waters flow, after a journey of over 1200 km, into the North Sea.
About halfway, you reach the new Stabbio, where it is often possible to chat with the alpine herdsman who spends the summer months in this valley with his dogs and more than a hundred yaks. These large and gentle animals, also known as Tibetan oxen, dot the landscape, giving it an exotic and original touch. In the final section, at over 2400 m above sea level, the terrain becomes rocky and takes on a special charm also thanks to the presence of numerous ibexes.
