Description
In Muttenz we visit the reformed parish church St. Arbogast. The originally Romanesque church from the 12th century was partially destroyed in the Basel earthquake of 1356, in the 15th century probably expanded as a fortified church to replace the then abandoned castle Vorder–Wartenberg and surrounded on all sides by a defensive wall. It is the only preserved church complex of this kind in Switzerland. Worth seeing are the frescoes from the 15th/16th century. The three castles on the Wartenberg, first mentioned in the 13th century, were already abandoned again in the 15th century. The Vorderer Wartenberg had strategic importance again between 1930 and 1940 during the border occupation. The bunkers date from this time.
The Reichenstein Castle, first documented in 1239, owes its name to the wealth of the Reich family.
In Arlesheim, the Ermitage presents itself as the largest and most beautiful English landscape garden in Switzerland. The romantic design with walking paths and viewpoints was created before the French Revolution. The already dilapidated Birseck Castle and its castle hill were redesigned with grottoes and ponds, laying the foundation for numerous similar parks throughout Europe. An automaton Capuchin was also not missing.
Landmark of Arlesheim is the cathedral. After the Reformation, it was the seat of the cathedral chapter of the Diocese of Basel from 1679 to 1792. Inside it houses the last preserved Silbermann organ in Switzerland from the year 1761.
